INTERVIEW
AmCham President Dr. Harley Seyedin and China Global Television Network reporter Omar Khan
discussed trade and future relations between China and the US during the Biden Administration on
January 25th.
When asked about his outlook on trade relations between the world’s two largest economies,
President Harley Seyedin explained that in spite of frictions between the two trading partners, there has
been no decoupling and no company has expressed a desire to leave china completely. He explained that
over 90% of surveyed companies hold a positive view on US-China trade relations. Harley also believes
that the Biden administration will look at the relationship between China and the US in a different way. He
believes an opportunity exists for a fairly long-term honeymoon period between US and China.
When asked about whether trade barrier imposed by both countries will be eased or relived
in the next year, President Harley Seyedin said the trade deficit standing at US$575 billion is just over
2% of US GDP and does not impact the US economy as severely as believed. He said that we need to look
at the harm trade frictions are doing to us and to work together to find common rounds. “we need to build
a platform where the American consumer can benefit far great from US-China trade and where Chinese
consumers can benefit from products and services which American know how and ingenuity produces so
well.
Looking to the Future, President Harley Seyedin suggested that there are many issues on which US and
China must work together. These include cooperating to protect the environment, eliminating poverty and
famine, ensuring an open and ever-expanding global supply chain, protecting the climate and many other
issues. “All humanity benefits when the two countries work together.”
