resident-Elect will lead the United
States with a divided government. His
administration will have to work with
senators and representatives from diverse
constituencies and make compromises in
order to strike deals that equip the county to
confront the challenges of the 21st century,
including its strategic rivalry with China. It
will be messy and challenging, and progress
will not be linear. But this is not a new
story—it is a very old one. Chinese leaders
pride themselves on taking a long view. The
United States faces plenty of foreign and
domestic challenges today, including in its
democratic institutions. But in the long view,
its democracy is not a source of weakness; it
is a source of strength.

Southern Daily wrote on Weibo that while
Biden would most likely treat Russia, not
China, as the biggest foreign threat to
the United States, “we don’t have to have
illusions.”

“One thing is for sure, things will never
return to the way they were before,” the post
continued. “The world is not the world it was
before.”
