Our purpose is to see that our competition is fair
and managed responsibly and to maintain the
integrity of the international system that had served
both our countries and the entire world so well over
the past fifty years. It was that same international
system that helped millions of women from every
corner of the globe escape poverty.
As an American diplomat in China, I’ve had the honor
of helping the United State in China find common
ground on issues of gender equality. In 1995. I was
on the staff of our countries’ delegation to Beijing’s
Women Conference, where delegates had prepared
and adopted the declaration and platform for action
that continues to define shared global gender goals.
Despite the progress we’ve made, much work remains
to be done. When I first considered becoming an
American diplomat many many years ago, only 5%
of the department of state’s foreign officers were
women. Today, women make up 43% of the officers
and that number continues to thrive.

self-motivated peers taking action to
empower future women leaders. I
truly believe together we can create an

The future I envision is one: Where
the institutions we depend on are
founded in true equity and promote
a level playing field, where women
can build and capitalize on their own
initiative to succeed. And, where
women benefit from the support of
trusted partners and communities as
they grow.
We all have a responsibility to
challenge traditional norms and
institutions and encourage women
to realize our full potential. The road
ahead is clear and we must keep
taking steps in the right direction.
