P. 22
To my fellow AmCham members and readers of this article at large.
Thank you for reviewing this article about my journey and special
appreciation is extended to Dr. Harley Seyedin, (President of
AmCham South China and the winner of 2017 Oslo Business for
Peace Award) for granting the publishing of this article. Thank you.
Let's just let that sink in for a moment. Harley, a true pioneer ex-
pat, embodies the American dream and leads AmCham from the
front with his business-oriented direction and focus. His vision and
dedication to helping businesses in China to flourish is the key point
that led me to make the decision to become a member of AmCham.
My 1st visit to China was in 1997.
I was hired as an engineering consultant to audit a Chinese/
State-owned OEM loudspeaker factory in Huadu. To physically
Philip Richardson, audit their readiness and willingness to be a loudspeaker driver
Vice Chairman for Audio Manufacturing Strategy supplier to an American assembler to General Motors was really

what I am all about. Reflecting on the past, sure, testing of engineering standards, compliance, and patience
were often pushed to thresholds and in retrospect, keeping my values and teaching them how to hit the standard
is what separates success from failure. We both had the same goal and overcoming the clutter led to success.
We made the 8" subwoofer for the PT Cruiser in 1999. The 1st Chinese OEM made, 8" woofer for a retro-styled
American-made vehicle, and many premium hi-fi speaker systems, and on and on. Ten years later that company
went public. I've dreamed about having my own loudspeaker factory and when they went public, it was a personal
cue to move on. In 2008 I designed, engineered, and had my factory built to my specifications.
In 2009 the factory was completed along with a world-class listening room. With the focus on manufacturing
premium drivers then later we expanded to complete systems passive and active. China has the largest and highest
selection of raw materials for manufacturing loudspeakers and visiting suppliers is all within a couple of hours
driving from my factory.
Fast forward to 2014 we built our own anechoic chamber, effective down to 40Hz, and in 2015 we created and
hosted the Loudspeaker Sourcing Show. The only show in the world dedicated to the sourcing of loudspeaker
driver units and loudspeaker components of which AmCham exhibited with a booth. Due to the pandemic, no
show was held in 2020.
China is a success story for me and is a testimony to set goals with
plans and surround yourself with like-minded people. The ex-pats
here represent the best foreign companies have. Join AmCham,
and see yourself grow.
