Trace the Silver Way
Consuls General of Ecuador, Korea, Mexico, and Spain
and many other attendants were eager to find out more
about the “Ruta de la Plata” or “Silver Way” on March 19.
The Silver Way fostered economic and cultural exchange,
laid the foundation for the first global currency, and led
to the rise of Mexico City, the first “world city”, long
before commonly perceived international metropolises like
New York and London came to attention. Peter Gordon, co-
author of The Silver Way: China, Spanish America and the
Birth of Globalisation, 1565–1815, took us back in history
to show the audience what we now call “globalization”.■
