While many modern cities boast a history that stretches back centuries, Guangzhou has
witnessed dynasties as an important center of trade and commerce. The sheer diversity of
historical sites can be a little daunting to first time visitors. In order to help visitors navigate their
way around the city's most interesting spots, the Guangzhou Urban Planning & Survey Design
Institute (GZPI), has released a set of three carefully designed walking and cycling routes. They
have been officially launched as the "Pearl River Eastwards—the glory and dream of the old and
new Guangzhou" route, the "Exploring Xiguan" route, and the "West Pearl River" cycling route.

Pearl River Eastwards Route Beginning at the Eastern Expedition Martyrs
Cemetery on Changzhou Island, this route
provides an excellent combination of walking
and sightseeing, showcasing the historical
development of the city. The Ancient Port of
Huangpu has long been witness to the prosperity
of the Maritime Silk Road, just as the glittering
cityscapes of Pazhou and Zhujiang New Town
are now witnessing a new era of prosperity.
