ER STORY BIG SHOES
Dear Members,
As I had mentioned last month, on very rare occasions, instead
of the usual 300-word “President’s Message” for this magazine,
I must take enough space and use enough ink to say what I have
to say about a particular topic I have in mind. That time, the
occasion was the nomination of the Governor of Iowa, Mr. Terry
Branstad, a distinguished Gentleman. While this time takes
places only a month later, and I am glad it is happening so soon
as on this occasion, I need to write about the confirmation of
another great American, Mr. Rex Tillerson, as our new Secretary
of State, becoming the 69th person to hold the office since its
creation in 1789.
Former ExxonMobil CEO Mr. Rex Tillerson was confirmed by
the U.S. Senate as secretary of State of the United States on
Wednesday, February 1, 2017 and shortly after, was sworn in
by Vice President Mike Pence in a ceremony presided over by
President Donald Trump at the White House.
As the weight of the world’s diplomacy rests upon Mr. Tillerson’s
shoulders, he also steps into the largest pair of shoes a man
can ever fill – those of Thomas Jefferson. On March 22, 1790,
Thomas Jefferson was sworn in as the nascent United States' first
Secretary of State, under its first president, George Washington.
During his tenure as the Secretary of State and later as the
president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson advocated the
