US and China Making
Progress on Trade
Talks
There are encouraging signs the two largest economies are talking and by some indication, making some
progress. AmCham South China hails this effort as a positive first step and highly encourages both sides
to continue to engage in discussions. Only through continued exchange of views we will see an end to the
current stalemate, removal of most trade barriers and an ultimate solution.
Following is what each side communicated after the initial talks.
From the US side:
Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen’s Virtual
Meeting With Vice Premier of China Liu He
WASHINGTON – June 1, 2021, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen held an introductory virtual
meeting with the Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China, Liu He. Secretary Yellen discussed the
Biden-Harris Administration’s plans to support a continued strong economic recovery and the importance
of cooperating on areas that are in U.S. interests, while at the same time frankly tackling issues of concern.
Secretary Yellen noted that she looks forward to future discussions with Vice Premier Liu.
