millions of people from around the world 2020 has been catastrophic. This
year, the world encountered COVID-19, wildfires, typhoons and a plague of
locusts, which left many in sorrow and anguish . The uncertainties left many in
despair, while deep down clinging to hope of a better future.
Themed “With the Hope of Celebrating World Recovery”, AmCham South
China’s 2020 Winter Ball took place at LN Garden Hotel in Guangzhou on
November 21. This glamorous event, as in the past, attracted a sold out crowd
of more than 500 well-dressed who is who of South China including business
leaders, consuls general of more than 30 countries, Chinese government officials
and representatives of more fifty media outlets.
As the night fell, guests arrived at the elegantly decorated foyer for a cocktail
reception, where sumptuous roast turkeys and excellent wine awaited to
titillate their palates and where chefs in tall white hats carved turkeys at
several carving stations. The cocktail reception brought our guests a unique feel
of “Thanksgiving in New Orleans”. It also provided a golden opportunity for
greeting acquaintances and making new friends.
The Winter Hope Ball started right on schedule as the clock struck 8:00 pm
with an AmCham charity video displayed on the 270-degree LED screen.
Short but meaningful, the video aimed to raise awareness of the need for
philanthropy and called on people to support orphans with severe illnesses.
The presentation was followed by an opportunity for the attendees to donate
funds directly to the Guangzhou Women and Children Medical Center through
the Guangdong Soong Ching Ling Orphaned and Disabled Children Fund. All
donations will be used to pay for poor and orphaned children’s immediate
lifesaving medical procedures. Money raised by various AmCham South China
charity events have so far saved the lives of 221 poor and orphaned children
who would otherwise not be alive today.
Once the entertainment program begun, a fascinating mix of Brazilian Samba
and Chinese New Year Lion Dance allowed our guests to experience a perfect
fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. While immersed in the cheerful rhythm
and dynamic melody, the attendees enjoyed exquisite full-course meals cooked
to perfection and accompanies by wonderful wines and drinks.
Another highlight of the night was the lucky draw, which encompassed various
prizes such as luxury wrist watches, gold, bicycles, luxury resort and hotel
stays, and airline tickets.
With so much work piling up at the end of the year, everyone looked forward
to the Disco Hot Dance and a hardy laugh. Putting on flamboyant masks
and taking off high-heeled shoes, they danced rhythmically on and off stage.
The Hope Ball lasted into the morning. While the city was asleep, those in the
ballroom reveled in a world of fantasy.
The Winter Ball this year not only concentrated on the hope of celebrating
world recovery, but also helped light up our hopes for good health and world
peace.
If you missed this fantastic Ball, be sure not to miss the next one!
