Summer campers perform, discover new confidence at a unique celebration
GUANGZHOU, People’s Republic of China – July 24, 2009 – In support of the tireless community service provided by the Guangzhou English Training Center for the Handicapped (GETCH) and at the suggestion of community service organizer Ms. Sally Werner, the American Chamber of Commerce in South China (AmCham South China) hosted more than 100 GETCH “Discover Yourself” Summer Campers and friends for a celebration on July 24 at the China Hotel. Partygoers enjoyed live performances by the students, in addition to food, drink and friends.
The “Discover Yourself” Summer Camp is a non-profit integrated summer camp for disabled Chinese teenagers, consisting of educational workshops, team-building exercises, city and historical tours, visits to cooperating NGOs, games and competitions. The “Discover Yourself” camp is free of charge to attendees and is supported by donations from the community.
Campers are drawn from students enrolled at GETCH, which offers 3-year Associate Degrees in Business English and Computer Skills to 18-25 year old physically-disabled students in China, all of whom receive full scholarships.
The camp itself is organized and run by GETCH staff and student volunteers, and brings together disabled youth from throughout China for a positive, supportive experience to help build confidence and friendships.
