10,000 Runners burned up the 2nd Terry Fox Run

The second Terry Fox Run was successfully held in Luhu Golf and Country Club on Saturday Nov 13th. This yearly charity event was organized by Consulate General of Canada, Foreign Friendship Organization and supported by American Chamber of Commerce in Guangdong.

Over 10,000 runners from foreign consulates, AmCham members and citizens from the Pearl River Delta area got together to support the cancer research. The raised money would be wholly donated to Guangzhou Charity Hospital and the Zhongshan Cancer Research Center.

Terry Fox Run is named by Terry Fox, a Canadian bone cancer and leg amputee, who started to run across Canada in order to raise money for cancer research in 1980. But he was forced to stop his run after 143 days as a result of his cancer spreading to his lungs. After his death one year later, people all around the world began to honor his heroic effort by holding an annual “Terry Fox Run” to commemorate his courageous spirit, and to raise money for cancer research. Nowadays, Terry Fox Run has become the biggest Charity party for cancer research in the world, held in more than 6,600 places in 55 different countries.

Terry Fox Run was first launched in Guangzhou in 2003. Last year’s Guangzhou event attracted 2,700 runners and raised 300,000 yuans, which was donated to the Zhongshan Cancer Research Center.
