June 27, 2007—AmCham South China hosted its second IPR Committee meeting of June at the Guangdong International Hotel in Guangzhou. During this roundtable, however, IPR Committee Chair David Buxbaum hosted Mr. Tim Browning of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to speak on two specific—and supremely relevant—topics: IPR protection for Apparel and Sporting Goods.
More than 30 representatives of companies and law firms, attended these two sessions, held throughout the afternoon, and the discussions were marked by a frank pragmatism on both sides. Mr. Browning discussed the issues he deals with and that he foresees affecting AmCham member companies, as well as the general political landscape surrounding the IPR issue.
Attendees then discussed their experiences, trials and successes in this area in an open format, allowing others to gain from their wisdom and Mr. Browning to comment on how specific cases relate to the broader issues. As long as Intellectual Property Rights are an issue—and they are a global issue—we will continue to pursue opportunities for AmCham South China members to best protect themselves and find success in maintaining their IPR.
