For Vice President:

Steven Cheng - Amway (China) Co., Ltd.__________________________________________Back to Top
Prior AmCham Service: Served as Governor 2003 - 2005 and as Vice President 2006-Present

I have been serving as Vice President of AmCham in South China since 2006, before that as Governor from 2003, and have always been an active member in supporting a wide array of events organized by AmCham in South China. I strongly believe that AmCham can play a very positive role in promoting trade, commerce and investment between the US and China, particularly in South China.

Currently, I am the Vice President of Finance - Greater China Region of Amway Corporation. I have been working and living in Guangzhou for more than 13 years to have profound sentiment towards this city. As one of the world’s largest direct selling companies with sales over US$9.2 billion, Amway has been a strong promoter of Sino-US trade relationship. Both its Chairman and President have tested in front of the Congress to support PNTR and China’s entry to WTO.

Amway China, one of the Top 500 largest MNCs in China, has been a devoted member of AmCham in the past years, who has actively sponsored and taken part in meetings, seminars and other programs organized by AmCham in South China. This is also in line with our company’s drive to promote Sino-US bilateral relationship and free trade between the two countries. As an AmCham member, we pride ourselves in not only sustainable business growth but also good corporate citizenship. Business aside, Amway China gives back to the society generously, making positive changes in children philanthropy, environmental protection and volunteer service for over 10 years. As of today, Amway China has over 60,000 Amway volunteers nationwide who have worked together and contributed more than 1.4 million service hours, benefitting 1.20 million children under the One by One Campaign for Children. In 2011, with the approval from Ministry of Civil Affairs, Amway China established the Amway Charity Foundation with RMB 100 million funds. The Foundation will focus on improving the life of children of migrant workers physically, mentally and intelligently. Our footprints of love and social accountability can be found from Michigan in the US all the way to the Great Wall in China.

It is an honor for me to be on the Board of Governors from 2003 to 2005 and serve as the Vice President from 2006 to 2012. With my professional knowledge and background in Finance, as well as my experience of operating business in China, particularly my passion to provide opinions and services to all the member companies, I sincerely seek your vote for re-election as Vice President in 2013 to continue working on our common interest.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to run as a candidate for Board Governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China. Walmart China and I have been working with the Chamber for over four years, and I would greatly like the chance to contribute further to the Chamber’s success.

My vision of being a Board Governor of AmCham South China is to help members of AmCham South China, specially medium and small business, strive for better growth environment in China and therefore achieve greater business successes.

This month, both United State and China are accomplishing their leaders’ transition, which will be generating significant impacts to U.S. enterprises operating in China. The AmCham South China would be a perfect platform for me to help our members navigate China’s political economy and to work with AmCham fellows for U.S. companies’ long-term benefits in China.

My confidence of fulfilling my commitment is based on my solid experience and strong government network. As Vice President of Government Relations and Affairs of Walmart China, I have been had tremendous opportunities of interacting with China’s decision makers, e.g. ministers, provincial governors, etc. and therefore established solid relationship among them.

My efforts of helping AmCham South China are also supported and endorsed by Walmart China. As the world leading retailer, Walmart have been demonstrated its high interests and confidence to grow in South China by establishing its China Home Office in Shenzhen, with full-function in managing all aspects of Walmart’s operation in China. In the past 16 years, we opened 383 stores in 147 Chinese cities. In Guangdong only, we have already opened over 70 stores with variety of format. The South China region is also one of the major regions for Walmart’s domestic and global sourcing.

Recently, we just announced ambitious goals about opening another 100 stores and creating over 18,000 new jobs in China in the next 3 years. Our commitments in China offer even more exciting opportunities to accelerate cooperation with our partners nationwide, including members of AmCham South China.

I am very much looking forward to working with the AmCham South China to help our members for long-term benefits and successes. Therefore I highly appreciate for your wise votes supporting me to be the Board Governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China. Thank you!

More specifically, how US business and its China business arms can continue to evolve and shriving in China. Will China become more and more an end market to US businesses? Or will there still be opportunities to localize manufacturing here. I sincerely hope that Amcham will continue to play an active role in this business exploration.
