AmCham Raises Funds, Spirits at Winter Charity Ball

Photos of 2007 Winter Charity Ball.

On November 17th, the American Chamber of Commerce in South China held its annual Winter Ball at the Shangri-La Hotel Guangzhou, drawing 600 community leaders together for a smashing night of dancing, dinner and a few drinks.

This year partnering with the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and the Half the Sky Foundation, the Chamber has worked to build a night to remember not only for entertainment, but for our collective support of two great causes.

MC and famed Hong Kong entertainer Philip Chan kept things hopping, covering the spectrum of emotion, from describing the precarious situation of the beneficiaries of the two charities’ work, to the excitement of the fast-paced charity auction—which raised just under 150,000 RMB in less than an hour!—to sweetheart sentimental waltzing and a surplus of up-tempo disco and new wave reprises from The Feel.

Also, open bar.

In addition to the goods and services auctioned off in the name of orphaned children and homeless disaster victims, many lucky attendees walked off with some truly luckily drawn prizes, including round-trip air tickets to the United States, hotel rooms in some four different cities—including the Presidential Suite of the China Hotel and the soon-to-open 450m2 Ritz-Carlton Suite.

It was a fabulous evening, but more fabulous is the community action that it represents.

“I think the numbers speak for themselves,” said AmCham President Harley Seyedin. “600 people attended the party, and during the night’s 30 minute auction alone AmCham members donated an additional 150,000 RMB to our charity cause. I am very proud of the AmCham community’s serious dedication to social responsibility.”

This community—our community—has pulled together to raise funds and awareness for two worthy charities, and we have done it while having fun ourselves. On the following pages, we have collected photos of the event, but more importantly, photos of the individuals who have played a part in making a difference. Every one of these people has given their time, money and heart to the greater community, and to creating opportunity to those who deserve it.
