With the curtain of the award ceremony falling,
the three-day Global Mayors' Forum & 2018
Urban Innovation Conference and The 4th Edition of
Guangzhou Award reached its climax. The event gathered
400+ delegates from 105 cities and local governments of 39
countries, representing the public, inter-governmental, non-
governmental, academic, and business sectors. Various thematic
forums and sessions provided a platform for exchange of thoughts
and ideas, ranging from technology, education, culture, mobility, and
environment to the Belt and Road Initiative and bay areas.

As a highlight of the event, the International Seminar on Learning from
Urban Innovation touched upon multiple issues discussed at other sessions.
The 15 shortlisted cities for the 2018 Guangzhou Award represent different
political, social, economic, and cultural contexts and tackle both common and
unique challenges with their innovative solutions. Here is a brief recap of what
was presented and discussed.

In the first stream of accessible cities, Sydney, Repentigny, Milan, and eThekwini
explored accessibility from different angles. What Sydney is doing now is transform its
oldest industrial area to a transit-oriented community that is friendly to public transport,
cycling, and walking and that promotes a sustainable lifestyle. Value capture and other
mechanisms are being applied to finance the development of this livable community.
