It is my great pleasure to introduce myself to you, the members and friends
of AmCham South China. I arrived in Guangzhou to assume my duties as
U.S. Consul General only recently, but in a way this is a homecoming for me.
I previously served as head of our consular section, and long before that, I
experienced Guangzhou as a grad student. As it was during that first time in
Guangzhou when I decided to become a diplomat, returning here as Consul
General has truly brought my professional life full circle.
Jim Levy Over the course of my career many things here and in the U.S.-China
Consul General relationship have evolved, while others are unchanged. Unchanged is the
Consulate General of the United States importance of the bilateral relationship for both countries. Unchanged is
of America, Guangzhou, China the United States’ commitment to consistent, sustained leadership in the
Indo-Pacific region, engaging with China and others to advance a broad
range of U.S. interests – interests that often overlap with those of our Asian
friends and partners.
Meanwhile, some things have evolved. Now, the United States has a
renewed commitment to working towards a fairer and more reciprocal trade
relationship with China. Our policy actions are intended to create a level
playing field that will give U.S. companies and all Americans a better chance
to succeed both now and in the years to come.
My commitment to you, the stakeholders here on the ground, is to keep
an open channel of communication to understand your challenges, and to
work diligently to support you, just as you support American prosperity
and serve as a bridge between the two countries. To this end, I look
forward to working with you all to explore ways to support U.S. businesses
in south China.
I am honored to have this opportunity to lead our diplomatic efforts here in
Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, and Hainan. I am confident that our consulate
and the private sector can partner in south China to achieve our shared
goals. And I look forward to chatting with you soon.
