Charles Bennett Happy 30th Birthday Hainan! As China’s youngest province and
Consul General largest special economic zone, Hainan is on the frontier of proposed
Consulate General of the United economic policy reforms. My consulate staff closely follows economic
States of America, Guangzhou, China policies to identify opportunities for American products and services,
which can make a positive impact in Hainan and throughout China. To
the extent that fair market-oriented policies are established and fully
implemented, the next thirty years will bring even greater prosperity to
this young province and all of China.
The United States is Hainan’s second largest export market and Hainan’s
primary source of imports. Last year, the Foreign Commercial Service
in Guangzhou hosted an airport construction roadshow in Sanya where
American companies demonstrated their products and services to Hainan
airport officials tasked with boosting Hainan’s tourism industry. More
recently, our Foreign Commercial Service team visited the Hainan Boao
Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone where Boston-based
Harvard Medical School’s Boston Brigham and Women’s Hospital is
advising investors. There could be more opportunities for American
companies and institutions to help raise the standard of living for
Chinese consumers and families if the policy environment was even more
welcoming throughout China.
At this year’s Bo’ao Forum, Xi Jinping committed to reduce ownership
restrictions for foreign firms, lower tariffs, and improve intellectual
property protections. Like similar announcements by Zhu Guangyao in
November and Li Keqiang in March, we welcome these commitments and
look forward to their implementation. When the opportunities are real,
American companies will be able to offer more high-quality products and
services demanded by China’s middle class. The real economy relies on real
economic reforms.
