ITOR’S NOTE
Dr. Harley Seyedin AmCham South China joins leaders from around the world in offering its
President heartfelt support and congratulations to China at the conclusion of the
AmCham South China 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The meeting, held
Vice Chairman every five years to draw the road map for national development, is the most
U.S. China Economic and Trade important political meeting for the country. The 19th CPC National Congress
Policy, APCAC will be known as a milestone in China’s peaceful development.
One of the primary goals expressed by China President Xi Jinping in his
concept of the Chinese Dream emphasizes the need for the people of China
to lead a better financial life. Much has already been done in this area, yet 50
million Chinese still live below the poverty line. Other future achievements
will likely be based on innovative, coordinated, open and shared develop-
ment. Opening up to more opportunities to foreign investment would open
up additional avenues toward this goal.
Both China and American investors have benefited tremendously from Xi’s
mission to build a relatively well-off society. Several of the news goals include
new investment possibilities for American businesses. We expect China will
continue to push ahead with initiatives such as Free Trade Zones and the Belt
and Road. These long-term plans will continue to boost economic growth and
infrastructure stability. We applaud China’s socio-economic development and
its role in maintaining peace and stability.
Great economic success creates great global responsibility. China will host
the president of the United States for a two-day visit this month for a series of
meetings between Donald Trump and President Xi. The president has un-
derscored a need for China to take concrete steps to level the playing field for
American workers, stressing repeatedly the need for reciprocal market access.
The bilateral discussions are expected to focus on the trade imbalances and
North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. The president and his First Lady
Melania Trump are scheduled to arrive on in Beijing on Nov 8. We welcome
our president to this side of the Pacific in our cover story in a breakdown of his
meetings and activities.
