Video Screening – American History Episodes 15 & 16: Marching to Freedom Land & Becoming Free. Time: 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m

 

Weekly Forum Vice-Consul Richard Jao and John Letvin on “Hydrocarbons and You – The U.S. Oil and Gas Industry” The discussion will be held from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

 

April 7:

 

American Film Night -- Melany Stacy will introduce the film at 6:45 p.m. and show the film at 7:00 p.m.  Following the showing of the film, the host will lead the participants in a discussion of the film's themes. 

 

Summary of movie: The Academy Award®-winning documentary is about sculptor and architect Maya Lin who, at age 21, designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The film tells the gripping story behind the Vietnam Memorial and explores a decade of her creative work.  Maya Lin's design of the Civil Rights Memorial, the Yale Women's Table, and the Juniata Peace Chapel reveals her ability to address major issues of our times through the healing power of art.

 

April 11 

 

Using English on the Job --  Darcy Zotter invites all those people who are using and/or should be using English on the job to join her for a discussion on Tuesday night from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.   The focus will be on English spoken in the office.   How do you conduct introductions, inquire about work requirements and … whatever the participants are interested in.

Video Screening - Framework for Democracy Series: American Heritage; The American experiment

 

 

Weekly Forum                       AMERICAN CULTURE: 

“Bill of Rights:  1791 to the Present” or

 “Understanding What Makes Americans Tick” or

“You Mean Americans Are Still Talking About That??”

 

 

In the weeks leading up to U.S. Independence Day, July 4th, the Public Affairs Section will focus its Weekly Forum on “The U.S. Bill of Rights: 1791 to the Present”  Beginning April 13, a U.S. Consulate official will explain why this particular amendment was so important in 1791.  The program’s host will then discuss how this amendment affects Americans’ every day life.  Participants will be invited to participate in a discussion of how they see this amendment continues to affect American culture and be a source of debate in the United States.     

 

Public Affairs Officer Darcy Zotter on “First amendment – Freedom of speech, press, religion, peaceable assembly, and to petition the government.  Her discussion will be held from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.  This discussion will be targeted at those people who want to better understand American culture.  This is not just for attorneys and law students, although they are of course welcome!!!

 

April 20

 

Video Screening - Framework for Democracy Series: The Living Constitution; Federalism

 

Weekly Forum – 2nd in the series:  Mike Brenn, Officer, American Consulate in Guangzhou on Second Amendment – Right to keep and bear arms. The discussion will be held from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

 

April 21:

The Summary of movie: The 25th Hour depicts the last day of freedom for a young man before he begins serving a seven-year jail term for drug dealing. Prowling through the city until dawn with his two close male friends and his girlfriend, he is forced to re-examine his life and how he got himself into his predicament, which leads to a shocking, disturbing finale.

 

April 25

 

Using English on the Job:  Darcy Zotter will conduct the second session of using English while you work.  This session will be a follow-up to the first.  The emphasis will be on improving spoken English in the work place.  All are invited.

Video Screening - Framework for Democracy Series: Civil Liberties - Expression & Privacy; Civil Liberties - Rights of the Accused

 

Weekly Forum – Third in the Series: Jim Turner, Officer, American Consulate in Guangzhou on Third Amendment – Protection from quartering troops. The discussion will be held from 3:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
