Battle Poverty in Guangdong’s Meizhou City’s Impoverished Villages

 

Cash Donation of RMB130,000 from Mead Johnson Nutrition and RMB100,000 from Jingxing Real Estate and

In-kind Donation of RMB254,100 to Help Raise Wuxing Village and the Nearby Impoverished Villages above the Poverty Line

 

MEIZHOU, CHINA – January 11, 2017 – The American Chamber of Commerce in South China (AmCham South China), as its 7th consecutive annual charity effort, today brought a large group of business and community leaders including executives from multinational corporations to Wuxing Village and the nearby impoverished villages.

 

As a poverty-stricken village by provincial standard under the administration of Meizhou City, Wuxing Village has a registered population of 5000 people, including 285 individuals of 81 poverty-stricken households. AmCham South China’s fundraising efforts this year collected in-kind donations worth over RMB254,100, covering clothing, computers, educational materials, bedding, food and beverage from the member companies.

 

As part of its overall charity activities, AmCham South China also coordinated cash donation of RMB230,000 by chamber’s generous members Mead Johnson Nutrition and Jingxing Real Estate to the Guangzhou Youth Development Foundation. These funds will be used to save lives of orphaned children in need of immediate life-saving surgery, and to help raise Wuxing Village above the poverty line.

 

On January 11th, a team of medical professionals from the Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center and the Sanitation Center of Zhuanshui County co-offered free onsite medical checkups and consultations to the villagers. The delegation also visited the local families in need of assistance, allowing AmCham South China to learn more about the villagers’ living condition. In addition, a few foreign teachers brought their tailor-made English lessons to the village’s primary school. On the next day, potential investors and experts will join the delegation for investment inspection during the visit to Wuxing Village and other nearby impoverished villages. GLIESE Film Company Ltd. sent a crew to film the events for a documentary to be released at a future date to raise awareness for the need for philanthropy.

About Wuxing Village

Wuxing Village locates east of Zhuanshui town, Wuhua County. Wuxing Village is home to 680 households and has a total registered population of around 5,000. A preliminary household survey shows that 157 households of the village (909 people) currently live below the poverty line, accounting for 23% and 19.8% respectively of the total household number and the total village population. The village is home to a primary school without a proper shield, a village committee without a separate workplace, and has no health station.

About Guangzhou Youth Development Foundation

Guangzhou Youth Development Foundation (hereinafter referred to as GYDF) was founded in May 4th, 1994. This public foundation was co-founded by Guangzhou Committee of China's Communist Youth League, Guangzhou Youth Federation and Guangzhou Working Committee of Young Pioneers. For a long time, GYDF has attracted broad attention and support from all sectors of society. Meanwhile, it has received guidance and assistance from central, provincial and municipal authorities. When the whole nation was faced with natural disasters, GYDF united and led the municipal youth to devote in earthquake relief. This manifests noble spirits of great love in Guangzhou.

 

Through development of 20 years, GYDF, with the help of public, has advanced with the times and solicited social resources, made a greater contribution to social welfare by building its website and Weibo, and organized voluntary service groups to broaden serving fields for teenagers.

 

About Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center

Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center (GWCMC) was established with the integration of the former Guangzhou Children’s Hospital and former Guangzhou Maternity Health Care Center. Covering an area of 37 thousand square meters and a built-up area of 130 thousand square meters, the hospital is equipped with 1400 beds. Among the 2603 staff, 282 are holding senior titles, 573 have received master level education or above and 47 of them are MD or MS mentors. In December 2012, GWCMC became the first public hospital in southern China to earn JCI accreditation. 

 

The Hospital has greatly enhanced its capacity building. Three specialties have been honorably recognized as National Key Clinical Specialties entitled by the Ministry of Health, including Respiratory, Gastroenterology and Pediatric Surgery; six as Guangdong Key Clinical Disciplines or Specialties, and one as Key Medical Laboratories listed in Guangdong “12th Five Year Plan”.
