Baseball Legend Cal Ripken Jr. Visits Guangzhou, AmCham Families

On November 5th, 2007, AmCham South China hosted Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and more than 400 AmCham members and their families at Luhu Golf & Country Club.

With the generous support of Mayland Group and strong organizational assistance from the U.S. Consulate in Guangzhou, the event was a major success, attracting community members from all over the PRD to meet the man himself.

Cal “Iron Man” Ripken Jr. retired from baseball in 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. His name appears in the record books repeatedly, most notably as one of only eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and 3,000 hits. On July 29th, 2007 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame after receiving the 3rd highest voting percentage recorded as well as the most total votes in the history of the Hall of Fame.

Ripken has always placed a strong focus on giving back to the community. In 2001 he and his family established the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation in memory of his late father. The Foundation helps teach life lessons through baseball to disadvantaged youth from all over the United States.

On August 13th, 2007 Ripken was appointed Special Ambassador for Public Affairs by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and recently toured Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to build bridges between our two cultures. In this role, he will be conducting an international tour early next year.
